Dear Holy Family Parishioners and Friends,
Greetings from Holy Family! You are always very close to me as I hold you in my thoughts and prayers!
I am sure by now you have seen the news and the announcement that the Diocese of Syracuse has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 before the United States Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of New York. I feel it is important to note that only the corporation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse is filing Chapter 11. Holy Family Church, all other parishes, schools, Catholic Charities, the HOPE Appeal, the Syracuse Diocesan Investment Fund, and all other separately incorporated entities in the Diocese are NOT directly involved in these proceedings.
I invite you to read the attached letter from Bishop Lucia and the Frequently Asked Questions regarding the filing of Chapter 11. I feel that they adequately describe the reason the Diocese has taken this action.
As your pastor, I want you to know that your restricted donations to Holy Family Church, Holy Family School, our food pantry, our capital campaign, and so on cannot be used for any purposes outside of their specified use at our parish. Again, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse filed Chapter 11 - NOT Holy Family Church.
You will see that the main reason the Diocese of Syracuse is filing for Chapter 11 is so there will be justice for all victims of clergy sexual abuse and to continue the mission of the Diocese - the proclamation of the Gosepl and saving souls. Currently, the Diocese has over 100 lawsuits that have been filed. As you can imagine, the legal fees for each case are very costly. One jury award could so diminish the assets of the Diocese that the Diocese would have little to nothing left to resolve other claims or to carry on the important ministries in our Diocese. This reorganization for the Diocese will help bring about justice for victims.
I just want you to know that I pray daily for victims of clergy sexual abuse. I pray that God grant them what they need for healing, peace of mind, and strength. I hurt for them and I am sorry that they have had to go through this pain and suffering due to the actions of the clergy or trusted lay people. Please join me in praying for the victims.
Tonight my heart is heavy that this action had to be taken. However, this reorganization will help those who have suffered for a long time and it will help the Diocese to identify priorities in ministry and continue the work of getting souls to heaven.
Again, I invite you to read the two documents I have attached. Thank you in advance for taking the time to do so.
Please remember this...we have a great parish (the best), we have a great school (the best), we have an abundance of ministries, and none of that will change...EVER.
Know of my love, prayers, and support. I ask, in your charity, to remember me in your prayers.
